Clever Ideas Wanted - Elf M. Sternberg
Clever Ideas Wanted
Damn, my jaw hurts. It's getting worse, not better, and I'm just so sick and tired of it hurting in the first place. I'm taking massive doses of ibuprofen because it seems to work best at moderating the pain, but I just want it to stop before next Tuesday when the stitches come out.

Anyway, the clever ideas I'm seeking are in regards to my anniversary, which is next Thursday. According to the traditions list, I'm supposed to be getting us either ivory or gold jewelry, although I suppose that the silk and lace categories from the year before might do just as well, since I can't recall actually trying to match those from last year as well. I'm terrible at buying gifts for Omaha and I was wondering what creative ideas people out there might have had.

I know what to get her next year. That's not a problem.

If the discomfort is getting worse, particularly since it's getting to four days and more for you post removal, then infection may have set in. Also, the molar may have been incompletely removed.

Admittedly, veterinary work isn't the best basis for analysis of human dental work, but if possible you might try getting someone to look at it this weekend. Seriously, don't wait 'til Tues to have this examined.

Best wishes and sympathy for your discomfort. I had six teeth pulled at once in my teens to make room in an overcrowded jawline, so I've a fair idea of how you feel.

Yeah, I'm rinsing. It's down to a not-so-subtle achiness. I called and they said that if it wasn't debilitating I should wait until Tuesday to have it checked out. Saturday was the worst; it was much better Sunday and it's been okay today.

I suspect you're right about it being at least somewhat infected. It didn't hurt this much when I had the other side out a few years back. The Doc just wants me to sit tight as long as it's not getting worse. It's not, it's getting better, and ibuprofen is working miracles. I just want it to be over. There's enough nuisance in my life as it is right now...

I don't know if you're into hokey jewelry at all, but I sure am. Marshall Fields has some nice lovey stuff, and some of it comes in gold.

Does that bring up the category?

What about something like an extra-lovely pair or two of handcrafted chopsticks? Even though they aren't these days, chopsticks are traditionally made of ivory.

IIRC, ibuprofen has recently been shown to inhibit bone
healing, so if your jaw got damaged you might want to switch to another painkiller.

Ibuprofen worries

The last thing I heard about ibuprofen was that it really messes up your liver, thus making problems for you if your body is trying to clean out an area, such as beneath your gumline.

You be careful, Elf. (shakes finger)

Re: Ibuprofen worries

Tylenol (acetominophen) is the one with dangerous liver toxicity. Moderate overdoses can put you in line for a transplant (or a coffin).

Re: Ibuprofen worries

Acetominophen (Tylenol) messes up your liver. Ibuprofen is associated with renal failure, but only when used chronically and in high doses. Hopefully, I won't be in pain long enough to fall into either category.

Massive doses of ibuprofen also seem to make one drifty, and not in a good way. Check with your doctor, since you really shouldn't be in that much pain at this point.

Why not get ivory lace? Or if it needs to be jewelry, make it bone, fossil or antique ivory. You don't want to contribute to the current slaughter of elephants.

Anniversary Gift

First, I hope the jaw continues to improve.

And secondly, I may have just the thing - Very old ivory - in my "gifts for the unknown obligation" box. You'll have to come look at it. It's from the oldest Chinese shop in Chinatown San Francisco. I got it on spec (as I'm wont to do:)) No more details so I don't spoil the surprise.

Otherwise - possibly a lace and bone fan, a nice pair of dangly gold earings (always a hit) or a gold-filled or plated necklace or bracelet (I can come shopping with you if you like).
