But doc, it prevents heart disease and Alzheimers!
My doc told me to cut back on the coffee. Hmm. Do I live with the acid reflux and risk the relatively rare esophogeal cancer, or do I stay awake and reduce my risk of more significant and commonplace diseases? Hmmm, decisions, decisions...

"The term 'brain storm' may be associated negatively with epileptic seziures..."
"Staff will therefore use the preferred term, 'idea showers', from henceforth."

Quote of the day:
"If elected, Barack Obama will be the first Affirmative Action President." (via Andrew Sullivan)

The Texas Republican Convention, In A Single Button
Would John McCain be man enough to stand up and say, "I do not want the sort of people who would wear this pin, or admit these men into my convention, to vote for me?"

Andrew Sullivan gets it wrong.
At one point, while defending the recent habeas decision, Andrew Sullivan says, "The United States never tortured and abused Nazi POWs the way we have tortured and abused and murdered many innocent detainees in American custody." But in the book After the Reich: The Brutal History of the Allied Occupation, author Giles McDonogh documents that we did exactly that, and that some of the prisoners we tortured weren't even Nazis, but unaffiliated Germans who had been too nice to America's newest foes, the Soviets.

This doesn't excuse our current moral tragedy. Those acts, too, diminished our moral standing in the world. But Sullivan ought to know better.

"How do we know if it's torture?" "If the detainee dies, you're doing it wrong."
One of the defense department lawyers, explaining to the chief of staff at Guantanamo Bay how to know if they're violating the Geneva conventions. The chief's response? "We'll need documentation to protect us."
